Map of Mali

The West African state of Mali is one of the poorest countries of the world. With 65% of its land barren desert or semi-desert, Mali is regularly stricken by drought.

The fertile Niger River basin can produce enough food for all of Mali, however this is dependent on rains that often fail, leaving crops and animals to die in the drought.

Islamic Relief in Mali

Islamic Relief established a field office in Bamako, Mali in 1997. IR's initial programmes were aimed at repatriating refugees from the civil conflict and improving their living conditions and access to nutritional food.

IR's current work in Mali includes community development programmes, school feeding programmes, a graduate training centre, water and sanitation projects, and orphan support.

Orphans' Programme

The Orphans Sponsorship Programme started in Mali in 1997. The programme currently serves orphans from Bamako, Mande and Ouelessebougou. In addition to receiving sponsorship money, clothes to celebrate Eid are provided to the neediest orphans.

Apart from the Sponsorship Programme, IR has also established the "Centre of Hope" which provides medical care for orphans and their families. Staff at the centre also check that the children are not suffering from malnutrition. The project covers the District of Bamako, the capital of Mali.
