For over three decades civil war has ravaged Sudan, Africa's largest country, killing over 2 million people and injuring thousands more. Five million Sudanese have fled their homes, displaced internally or as refugees. Most cannot return home while the war continues and have lost their livelihoods, homes and land.

For many Sudanese the essentials of life such as sufficient food, clean water, and health and education services are simply not available.

Islamic Relief in Sudan

IR started work in North Sudan in 1988 and has been providing humanitarian and development assistance to vulnerable communities in Sudan.

In the past few years IR has implemented various development and relief activities in many places in Sudan, including Khartoum, Darfur, southern Sudan, the Blue Nile and the Nuba mountains. The North Sudan program covers vocational training for women and youth, a school for hearing impaired children, mother and child health, water and sanitation, support to orphan, primary and literacy education and emergency relief programs.

Orphans' Programme

The Orphans Sponsorship programme began in Khartoum in 1992 sponsoring 25 orphans in that first year. Recently, the programme has expanded to include orphans from other areas including Khartoum North and Omdurman. Islamic Relief also has sub-offices in Damazine and El Obaid through which many of the orphans are sponsored.

In 2006 the Orphans Educational Enhancement Project was initiated, and each year it will provide school bags, stationery and hygiene kits to sponsored orphans. Orphans also benefit from Ramadhan and Qurbani food distributions,
