Conflict & Devastation
War erupted in Kosova
in 1999, sending almost 1 million people fleeing across the
borders. The Kosova refugee crisis was the worst humanitarian
disaster in Europe since World War II. Horrific atrocities
were committed during the conflict between the Yugoslavian
Serb forces and the Kosova Liberation Army.
NATO intervention ended the war in June 1999, and the Kosovars
returned to pick up their shattered lives. Thousands of returning
refugees found their homes looted and burned to the ground.
Almost half of Kosova's schools were damaged or destroyed,
and thousands of landmines, and booby traps were planted across
the province.
Widows & Orphans
Widows and orphans are the most vulnerable population in Kosova.
With the loss of the main bread-winner the family is often
left destitute. Many of the women and children also suffer
from psychological trauma after horrific experiences during
the war.
Islamic Relief in
Kosova
Islamic Relief established operations in Kosova in 1999, contributing
to the relief and reconstruction efforts in the province.
IR's office in Prishtina has working with some of the most
vulnerable sections of the population.
Islamic Relief's projects in the area have included Emergency
Shelter, School Rehabilitation, Micro-enterprise Development,
Psychosocial Programmes for Women and Children, and a Mine
Awareness project contracted by UNICEF.
