Kharan Water Project (KWP)

Project Overview
The aim of this project is to provide water pumps to community members allowing them access to clean water in the vicinity of their villages.

The pumps are designed to ensure safety to users as well as making them hygienically safe from livestock contamination. In addition, community members are trained in basic maintenance of the pumps to ensure their sustainability.

Problem / Project Background
Kharan is among the worst drought affected district of Balochistan. The drought has affected almost the entire district severely. The shallow dugwells have gone dry and inhabitants were forced to migrate closer to some water source to service, which was unfortunately not available due to region wide drought.

In the present situation clean drinking water is an acute need and shallow wells with and without hand pumps also exist at a depth of around 80 to 120 feet.

In most cases where the shallow well exists in the area it is largely uncovered, hence the water is contaminated and becomes the major source of water borne diseases particularly amongst the infants.

There is a dire need to protect these sources of water and handpumps and to consider an appropriate alternative for the communities.

Project Objectives

  • Installation of hand pumps over the existing wells in needy and drought stricken areas of Kharan.

  • Improvement of health conditions by provision of clean drinking water facilities in far flung villages of Kharan.

  • Awareness creation about basic health and hygiene practices

  • Capacity building of villagers for proper operation and maintenance of the facility.

Project Activities
Main activities carried out under the programme are as follows.

  • Installation of community hand pumps and windmills for increased access to water

  • Construction of concrete well heads and aprons, animal trough, drainage line and washing area to eliminate surface contamination through animal excreta, as well as separating water areas of livestock and for washing

  • Community organization coupled with awareness about sanitation, health and hygiene, through community level trainings, also introducing water conservation and filtration processes at village level.
