Al-Azhar Educational Institute Expansion

Project Overview
The travel restrictions between refugee camps and main cities has increased demand for educational facilities that the refugees can easily gain access to.

Islamic Relief has undertaken a project to expand the Al-Azhar educational institute facilities by constructing an additional floor and adding three new classrooms.

Problem / Project Background
The strict travel restrictions, closures and arbitrary denial of passage to Gaza City (location of main campus) from Khan Younis have increased the need and demand for additional places at the local campus of this and other further educational institutes.

This has created a need to expand the capacity of local educational institutes to take on additional students in order to enable them to continue their studies with minimum disruption.
The Al-Azhar institute was established in the rural Qizan Al-Najar area in Khan-Younis.

The daily siege placed on the Gaza Strip separating the south from the north means that many students are unable to reach their university in Gaza City.

With the sieges lasting months at a time many students have enrolled at the local campus of Al-Azhar Institute.

The resulting increase in students has created a need for a new floor to be constructed containing three classrooms, public utilities and stairs.

Project Objectives
Build an additional floor, comprising three classrooms to accommodate more students.

Project Activities
Coordination with local representatives and Khan Younis Municipality, followed by construction work.

Beneficiaries
Two thousand students.
