/ Project Background
Despite the commitment of the Albanian government to reduce
poverty and provide assistance to the poor, poverty is on
the rise throughout rural Albania. In response to growing
food insecurity, the World Food Programme (WFP) signed an
agreement with the Albanian government for a "Protracted
Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO)" which will support
the government's longer term efforts to eradicate poverty.
The PRRO programme improves household food security and strengthens
participatory structures through self-help activities. This
initiative enables a transition from relief-oriented food
aid distribution to recovery projects, where durable improved
local infrastructure is created.
Fulltime Food For Work beneficiaries will work in return
for a monthly household family ration of wheat flour, vegetable
oil and salt.
This project builds upon and expands Islamic Relief's Quick
Impact Projects which have been operational in Albania
since 1999.
Since September 2002, Islamic Relief has implemented fifteen
"Food for Work" activities (road repair, water supply
and irrigation canal repair) throughout villages in rural
Shkodra and Kukes Prefectures.
