Project Background
In February 1998, President Milosevic sent in troops to reclaim
KLA controlled areas of Kosova and in the process sparked
rioting which led to an escalation of the conflict and subsequent
war.
This war drove out the local population and
led to mass destruction by the Serbian authorities of the
local infrastructure, including schools, houses and economic
activities owned by the Kosovans.
NATO launched an air campaign as a result of
which Serbia finally agreed to sign a UN approved peace agreement.
As a result of this, many of the refugees that had fled their
homes returned back but were faced with numerous problems.
The Islamic Faculty of Kosova started in 1992
located in two building and providing the school and a Madrassa.
Following the war there was no income to pay staff or continue
the Faculty because the students could not afford the fees.
To make matters worse, the Islamic Library of
the Faculty, was burnt by the Serbs. The Faculty provides
for approximately 200 students who come there for Quranic
and Islamic Studies allowing them to prepare life as Imams
and religious teachers.
